São João – 24 de junho
Filho dos personagens bíblicos Isabel e Zacarias, João Batista batizou Jesus Cristo com as águas do Jordão, rio que hoje é fronteira natural entre Israel e Jordânia e entre este país e a Cisjordânia. Diz o capítulo 1 do Evangelho de São Lucas que Isabel era prima da mãe de Jesus, Maria, o que tornava João primo em segundo grau de Cristo.
João Batista é descrito na Bíblia como pessoa solitária, que vivia no deserto e comia gafanhotos e mel. O caminho desse homem estranho e recluso, mas profeta de grande popularidade, cruzou com o da família real da época, a do rei Herodes Antipas, da Galiléia. João condenou publicamente o fato de o rei ser amante da própria cunhada, Herodíades, viúva de Felipe. Conta São Marcos (cap. 6, vers. 17-28) que Salomé, filha de Herodíades, dançou tão bonito diante de Herodes que este lhe prometeu o presente que quisesse. A mãe de Salomé aproveitou a oportunidade para se vingar: anunciou que o presente seria a cabeça de João Batista, que já estava preso. O presente tétrico foi trazido sobre uma bandeja.
A imagem de São João Batista é geralmente apresentada como um menino com um carneirinho no colo. É que foi ele, segundo a Bíblia, que anunciou a chegada do cordeiro de Deus.
João fogueteiro
Apesar de descrito como um sujeito solitário, o povo se encarregou de criar o mito de que São João Batista adora uma festa barulhenta. No entanto, ele costuma estar dormindo justo na noite de sua festa, 24 de junho. Se o estrondo dos fogos de artifício for alto e for forte o clarão das fogueiras, o santo acorda e, festeiro que é, desce à Terra para comemorar. Mas nesse caso, diz a tradição, existe o sério risco de o mundo acabar pelo fogo.
